Supplements I Take to Support my Adrenals

I’ve been seeing a functional medicine doctor for about a year and a half now and let me tell you, I have learned so much from going over my lab results. While I’m not a doctor, I still wanted to share my experience and a few basic tips for supporting your adrenals.

First, we should discuss what are your adrenals?

Without going into too much detail, the adrenal glands are an important part of the endocrine system. They help regulate the bodies stress hormone, cortisol, while also producing hormones like, estrogen, progesterone, adrenaline, dopamine, and more.

When these glands aren’t working properly due to inadequate nutrients, too little sleep, too much stress, etc., a person can experience adrenal dysfunction or later, adrenal fatigue and adrenal failure.

Since my labs have shown signs of adrenal dysfunction, here are a few things I’m doing to try and fix the issue.

Take a Vitamin C Supplement

Vitamin C is needed for the production of cortisol in the adrenal glands. When vitamin C levels are low, the body can’t produce enough cortisol needed to combat stress. According to this Pub Med article, “Vitamin C is an important cofactor for both adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla.”

I currently take the Liposomal Vitamin C packs from the brand Cymbiotika. I either squeeze the packet into my mouth directly or mix it into a glass of water.

Take a Magnesium Supplement

Magnesium is involved in 300+ biochemical reactions in the body. In the adrenals, magnesium helps keep cortisol levels within a normal range.

There are quite a few different types of magnesium supplements to choose from, some better than others. I currently take Magnesium Glycinate .

Take a Vitamin D Supplement

Quick side note when it comes to Vitamin D. If you’ve never had your vitamin D levels tested, this is your sign to ask your doctor during your next physical. I think we’ve all learned throughout 2020 that vitamin D is essential to the immune system and research suggests that about 42% off people in the U.S. are deficient.

Turns out adequate Vitamin D is essential for proper adrenal function.

Drink an Adrenal Support Cocktail

In combination with taking these supplements I also support my adrenals by managing my stress levels, getting quality sleep each night, and limiting environmental toxins.
